Jonathan Cane

*1978 in Johannesburg, South Africa. Lives and works in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Jonathan Cane is a Research Associate in the University of Johannesburg’s Research Centre Visual Identities in Art and Design. He also a Lecturer in Critical Studies and Visual Communication at Vega School of Brand Communiction. He is currently completeting his Masters in History of Art at The University of the Witwatersrand. An active practitioner working in mediums from furniture to photography, his research is an investigation of the inscrtiption of white heterosexuality on the South African landscape. He is the founder of Greenoil Guild an interdisciplinary design studio and chef/patron of Quilter and Workman, an experimental food design restaurant.

Zen Marie and Jonathan Cane asked the students in their Critical Studies class to explain what the concept discourse means. The film is a collection of the least and most interesting responses. What began out as a kind of examination for students turned into one for the teachers; of their pedagogy and of Theory.
